The fall outlook for corn production in the immediate area looks to be quite bountiful, while the dryland soybean crop with its tremendous canopy from above average rainfall during its vegetative growth, is requiring additional moisture to fulfill its crucial grain fill cycle.
Outside the immediate area, rainfall has been patchy and generally below average through the month of August. Statewide across Kansas, two-thirds of the corn is reported below average to poor. While some rainfall was attained mid-summer, extremely dry conditions persist in the south and western parts of the state.
As mother nature calls the shots on the production side of things, we are seeing a rise in fall-planted wheat acres with some of the best opportunities for economic benefit in many years with current prices in the wheat futures market.
Many farmers across the Midwest are taking advantage of financial aid incentive programs that were available to seed a fall planted cover crops. We will see continued support in this area that could benefit the farmer/rancher, both in soil health and livestock grazing, as the country continues to offer companies incentives to improve their carbon footprint.
